OUR VISION

African Unity is no longer an option;

it is a necessity.

Annual African Events Celebrated by AUAW Inc.

May 25th: Africa Day

An Annual AUAW Event

Africa Day is celebrated annually on May 25th. It commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU)—which became the African Union (AU) in 2002—on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Here are the key highlights for the 2026 edition:

Date: Monday, May 25, 2026.

Significance: This day celebrates African unity, the liberation of the continent, cultural diversity, and socio-economic progress.

2026 Theme: The African Union Commission has focused on "Ensuring the sustainable availability of water and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063."

Objectives of Africa Day

Celebrate Pan-Africanism: To strengthen unity and solidarity among African nations.

Promote Culture: To highlight the continent's diverse cultures, art, music, and history.

Reflect on Challenges: To assess development, peace, and the progress achieved.

Celebrate the Diaspora: To recognize the role of Africans worldwide.

Activities and Celebrations: Although it is an official public holiday in certain countries (Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, etc.), the day is commemorated across the globe through:

Official speeches by African Union leaders.

Cultural events, parades, and exhibitions.

Debates on development issues.

It was formerly known as "African Freedom Day."

July 7: African Integration Day

An Annual AUAW Event

African Integration Day is celebrated annually on July 7th, a date designated by the African Union to honor progress in regional unity. It aims to promote economic cooperation, strengthen continental solidarity, and address development challenges—often linked to the vision of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Date: July 7.

Objective: To celebrate achievements, draw lessons, and address the challenges of regional unity.

Context: Instituted in 2019 by the Heads of State of the African Union.

Themes: Development, connectivity, and intra-African economic cooperation.

Not to be confused with Africa Day (May 25), which celebrates the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963.

September 9: African Union Day

An Annual AUAW Event

African Union Day (or "AU Day") is specifically celebrated on September 9. Although May 25 is "Africa Day" (commemorating the creation of the OAU in 1963), September 9 marks a distinct and more recent milestone in the continent's history.

Historical Significance

The Sirte Declaration (1999): This day commemorates September 9, 1999 (9/9/99)—the date on which the Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) signed the Sirte Declaration in Libya.

Birth of the African Union: It was this official act that resolved to establish the African Union (AU) to replace the OAU, with the aim of accelerating the continent's economic and political integration.

Why the Distinction?

May 25 (Africa Day): Celebrates liberation from colonialism and the founding of the first continental organization (the OAU).

September 9 (AU Day): Celebrates the modern vision of an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, as championed by Agenda 2063.

2026 Celebration: The next African Union Day will take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. It typically features official messages from the Chairperson of the AU Commission, as well as events highlighting progress in intra-African cooperation.

AUAW is the voice of a United Africa!

- Ensure the application of treaties,

- Promote the free movement of persons and goods,
